" Economists say consumers will have to lead us out of recession and the week's economic reports will help to show us whether they are ready to do that. We look at the week ahead on Wall Street with MarketWatch reporter Andrew O'Day."
" Well later in May -- we can call it the great consumer awakening. Consumers appear to be awakening from their recessionary slumber. The alarm clock -- in the government's cash for clunkers program went into effect sending buyers flocking to auto show rooms. Those sales may slightly skewed this week's July retail sales report according to S&P chief economist David weeks a lot of --"
" Sales appear to have been made towards the end of the month. And my guess is most of those -- up swapping over into. Into the following month."
" Economists surveyed by MarketWatch see retail sales up one point 1% three tenths excluding autos. Trade is also on this week's agenda we says the June trade report could give us a clue about how much longer the economic slump may last."
" Been looking at double digit declines in exports. If that continues to and be harder to get out of this."
" An update on inflation should be a non events analysts see the Consumer Price Index unchanged in July up slightly excluding food and energy. That's all I've got Adrian back to you."

One analyst tells The Wall Street Journal it's a good move saying -- show your competitor what's going on inside your own house. -- much movies on dvd. Have you bought any new ones lately. And -- and Tracy Johnke found out the industry is helping sales are --"
" Earning around hello majoring in. Well we've been hearing a lot about how we are taking refuge from the recession at the movie theater that we haven't been talking so much about what's going on that home and we've been buying dvds and in this recession is that one of the areas where we're cutting back -- Our consumer -- is here to hear that talk about that."
" That's right for the for the first half of the year dvd sales on the whole were down more than 13%. Of the Blu-ray sales have been doing pretty well. But what's happened is lately is Universal Pictures released fast and furious -- A series of movies that that's been around for awhile and it just the first week three million units were were sold or or or rented. -- starting to pick up so what that's what they're hoping it has fast and furious I was the first movie. In 2009 to make at least 150 million dollars in the box office domestically. And also Hollywood is heading in to news of so they're hoping that the success of fast and furious would translate into some of the other big hits we have this summer sort of and a slump right now as far as big hits that. But they're hoping the latest transformers. Which. And that being so far -- ninth highest grossing movie of all time that that will translate into strong dvd sales. Also Star Trek and the hangover which was the surprise hit. They're both still the top fifty as far as of all time grossing movies. And they're hoping that as as those are released on dvd to later this year that battle. We'll spur demand for dvd sales. So perhaps this is a sign that the economy is picking up as well maybe economists to be paying ten dead that could be AME consumers have all around us we know have been cutting back including there's there's anecdotal evidence that their their. Not buying as many movies that they're renting them about my experiences with global Scotts has much to ran out. In some cases. As a justify them although I'm the same way to really like that movie before I'll I'll buy it."
" your ears are you racking up late fees what are you doing now now now -- It -- so -- that would bring your kids a little you violent anti news. Then tends to slow down. Because I just -- the disease challenge that company so that's even cheaper except for paying for the cable velvet. And I know I'm just this is obviously not scientific but -- have a lot different -- used to collect dvds and and you know amassed hundreds of -- and after what you just right now let's say Iran and the space and -- I don't have time just to sit there and watch all of them. I have a friend of mind is that the to house with a built in movie theater and it. The dvd holds. 500 dvds. Well yeah I was kind of taken aback -- they -- been an even half 500 mask they are saying you know how many hours that yeah ours has sounds just be glued to your movie -- I guess so you would never leave the house now I guess that's -- point kind of but. It's especially if you have been nice enough Bendix diner on home button and -- yup yeah. Except it kind of surprised me that that dvd sales were so weak keys and 13%. And declined beat. We're supposed to be nesting right now we are. Well it's also the case of if you remember years ago with those VHS versus beta max format would land. And now and consumers right now are still waiting just to see that people. That many people have gone completely to Blu-ray. And but there thank -- Los that I buy a dvd in my the old -- Paterson and wait till I get around to upgrading my. My disc player to something else that's at some of it's that. Now on we brought on by that -- I don't feel like doing any of us can't see the difference analysis. Dvd players that make up for the shortcomings. Regular world. Dvds look and a hair on their fancy. LED here whenever flat panel TVs via cell and a one -- some old old cousin from earlier this decade TV so. Well thank you -- thank you."
